  • 1/9/18: #4 Alabama 26  #3 Georgia 23  (OT)

    • The game was an instant classic and the box score below shows just how closely the two teams mirrored each other.
    • One stat that was overwhelmingly in UGA’s favor, however, was 3rd down efficiency, which indicated a huge disparity between the two powerhouses. The Bulldogs converted 8 of 19 3rd downs while the Tide converted an abysmal 3 of 14.
    • UGA took a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Bama’s offense looked inept and Jalen Hurts was struggling.
    • Nick Saban made what turned out to be one of the best coaching decisions of his illustrious career by going to the bullpen after halftime and inserting Hawaiian freshman phenom Tua Tagovailoa in at quarterback.
    • The Bulldogs went on top of the Tide 20-7 in the 3rd quarter before Tagovailoa led the Tide back with a chance to win the game in the closing seconds, but Bama kicker Andy Pappanastos missed a 36-yard field goal resulting in OT.
    • UGA’s Rodrigo Blakenship kicked an impressive 51-yard field goal to put the Bulldogs up 23-20. On Bama’s first offensive play in OT, Tagovailoa took a gut-wrenching sack for a 16-yard loss that was thought to cripple Alabama’s spirit, but then a legend was born. The freshman Crimson Tide quarterback found freshman wide receiver DeVonta Smith streaking down the left sideline wide-open for a 41-yard National Championship Game winning touchdown.
